Namurembe Rita Brown’s Inspiring Journey: How Yoga Helped a Refugee Overcome Adversity.

Namurembe Rita Brown’s story is one of perseverance and resilience. As a Ugandan Acholi who arrived at Kakuma Refugee Camp in 2000, she faced numerous challenges, including limited access to education and opportunities for personal growth. Despite these obstacles, she completed her primary, secondary, and tertiary education, focusing on social work and business administration.

Namurembe’s passion for helping others led her to work voluntarily as a healthy choices facilitator for the International Rescue Committee, teaching important topics such as reproductive health to school dropouts and drug addicts. Her dedication to service earned her the trust and respect of her community.

However, Namurembe faced a setback in her fitness routine when she was barred from a gym due to a policy of not allowing refugees in after 5:00 PM. Undeterred, she turned to skipping rope and dancing at home to stay active. It was then that a Somali friend introduced her to yoga, which was free at a nearby youth center.

Despite experiencing pain and needing painkillers after each session, Namurembe was committed to the practice and eventually improved her skills. Yoga taught her about healthy eating and self-care, positively impacting her personal life. She even offers private lessons for income.

Namurembe’s inspiring journey caught the attention of a follower named Rollins Salim, who introduced her to Yoga Alliance Foundation. She became a member and alumnus, furthering her knowledge and skills in yoga.
